A man has flown a plane into his own home after assaulting his wife in a nearby canyon, where they had gone to talk about their problems.

Duane Youd, 47, died in the incident and his wife and a child, who were in the house at the time, managed to escape the burning building and survived.

Authorities believe Youd, who was an experienced pilot, crashed the plane deliberately.

He was booked into jail for domestic violence on Sunday evening after witnesses at American Fork Canyon in Utah called the police to report he had assaulted his wife, and later released on bail.

He then requested an officer escort him to the home so he could pick up some belongings, and did so without incident.

But hours later, after 2am, he was taking off in a plane believed to belong to his employer and flying directly to his home.

The plane narrowly missed crashing into power lines and other homes, according to police sergeant Noemi Sandoval, and images from the scene show the wreckage of the white plane charred in pieces in the garden.

The house, located in an upscale suburban area, was intact but badly burned over the front.

Reports indicate that Youd had agreed to attend six months of family counselling sessions as part of a plea agreement for domestic violence, in which he was charged with disorderly conduct.
